Butter Beans Food & Garden Summer Camp: A Seed-to-Table Journey in Food

Butter Beans (2)Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Butter Beans.

Eating is an essential part of our daily lives, and with a population of over 8 million residents in New York City, what we choose to eat here has a major impact on our environment and on communities near and far.

Now in its fourth summer, Butter Beans Food & Garden Summer Camp offers children ages 6-10 the unique opportunity to explore food through gardening, specialized workshops, field trips, cooking, tasting and mindful eating.

By examining the food cycle, campers develop a deeper appreciation for the food that fuels them throughout their day while learning about how the interconnected nature of our environment and communities affect our food choices.

Butter Beans (1)Over the course of the summer, campers experience the main facets of the food cycle: Growing, Producing, Preparing, Composting and Preserving. We visit a variety of our “Partners in the Field” each week to create a hands-on experiential learning environment in which campers uncover the intricacies of food.

Some of these food experts can be found in a literal field – out in the garden, on a rooftop farm or in the case of master forager Leda Meredith, in Central Park searching for wild edibles. Our campers learn alongside these foodies, chefs, gardeners, food writers, musicians, nutritionists and farmers in a fun and meaningful way.

Butter Beans (3)We are excited to announce some new field trips and events including workshops with SweetGreen, worm composting with Earth Matter on Governor’s Island, gardening at the Battery Urban Farm and a private concert with local singer-songwriter Jay Mankita, whose “Eat Like A Rainbow” album will inspire us all!

Camp runs from July 7th – August 22nd and is located at 201 West 13th Street in Manhattan. To reserve your spot, register here or email us at camp@butterbeanskitchen.com with any questions.

Come join our Camp Open House on May 7th from 3:15-5:15 pm to tour our camp headquarters, connect with our Camp Director and get a taste of the unique Butter Beans Food & Garden experience.

By introducing our youth to the food cycle, we hope to inspire our future leaders to nourish and care for our food systems and the well being of our communities. It all starts with one small seed!
