Insider’s Guide for Things to Do in Bed-Stuy

by Rochelle Campbell

On first blush, Bed-Stuy is a cultural melting pot that is filled with not only historical venues but has some really cool things to do and kid-friendly places to catch a bite! Brooklyn Mamas has a highlighted a few of our favorite places.

Herbert Von King Park, BrooklynVon King Park located at Marcy/Tompkins Avenue between Greene & Lafayette Avenues maybe a small park but is an extremely active park that has a great baseball field where kids can play softball with the Inner City Sports Little League.  The league is subsidized which makes it  very pocket-friendly when you have more than one child in the home.  There’s also a cultural center at the center of the park where there’s a very tiny petting zoo and  pottery classes 3 times a week.

The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA at 1121 Bedford Avenue corner of Monroe Street is a wealth of fun and a hub of social activity.  The YMCA  offers workshops, exercise classes, swimming classes and more. Ms. Dahlia's Café Brooklyn Ms. Dahlia’s Café is a really comfy laid-back eatery. After softball, dancing and working out you’ve got to eat and Ms. Dahlia’s Cafe has the best chicken ‘n waffles, specialty iced teas (cucumber ginger!!), organic pies, homemade biscuits, yumm!  My son loves the mini cupcakes — red velvet, of course.  Located in the heart of Bed-Stuy at 449 Nostrand Avenue, Ms. Dahlia’s space is filled with wicker furniture, brightly colored throw pillows and has free WiFi (allowing parents to get some work done!). Find out more by visiting them at: www.dahliascafe.com.

A & A Doubles & Bake Shop is located at 481 Nostrand Avenue near Fulton Street.  This little Trinidadian shop makes the BEST A & A Doubles & Bake Shop doubles and bakes.  The line is long every morning and everything is baked fresh!  Just remember, tell them no pepper!
