Given the cold weather, you may not be thinking about Spring and certainly, not thinking about blooming flowers. No matter, flowers will be the order of the day with the largest nation’s largest exhibition of orchids at The Orchid Show at the New York  Botanical Garden and you will feel like you are in Hawaii when you visit The Philadelphia International Flower show with their “Islands of Aloha” theme. Whether you head to the Bronx or make the trip to Philly, it will put you in the mood for Spring.

The Orchid Show: Patrick Blanc’s Vertical Gardens

This is the 10th year of The Orchid Show housed in the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. French botanist and artist Patrick Blanc‘s stunning structures are covered in orchids, ferns, exotic plants, and epiphytes and appear to be freed from the constraints of gravity. If you are like me who can’t keep a plant alive let alone an exotic plant like the orchid alive for more than a week, you can learn  Blanc’s  exciting gardening techniques on how to  grow, and keep orchids alive. Not a gardener but want to learn more about this beautiful flower, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden has a series of lectures, tours, demonstrations, and public programs. And if you are looking for a date night idea, take in the orchids at night with Orchid Evenings and enjoy cocktails with a evening view of thousands of these amazing flowers.
When: March 3 – April 22
Where: New York Botanical Gardens, 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10458

Philadelphia International Flower Show – Islands of Aloha

Can’t go to Hawaii this year, well, if you head to the the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show you will experience Hawaii as they turn  the Pennsylvania Convention Center into a Hawaiian paradise. The exhibition will feature a giant wave of orchids and towering 25-foot waterfalls as well as having incredible motion graphics that will dramatically transform the show floor with lava flows and crashing waves. Hawaiian flowers are not the only Hawaiian feature, as visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in a traditional Hawaiian luau, featuring hula dancing, music and chants or visit the Hawaiian Village to shop for handmade and natural items for the home and garden that pay tribute to the people of Hawaii.

Worried that the Philadelphia International Flower Show is just for adults, don’t be. The  Family Lounge features children’s activities such as crafts and special events surrounding the new animated feature film “The Lorax,” based on the popular story from Dr. Seuss. In addition, the weekends will have  special Family Day events on Sunday March 4, Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11.
