Mamas Memorial Day Weekend Roundup 2013

Memorial Day is our favorite holiday in NYC. Wanna know why? because everyone flees the city for greener grass leaving only the few behind to enjoy it, empty, as if it were a scene out of 12 Monkeys. The city is very seldom calm as it is on Memorial Day, there is ample parking, virtually no traffic and the lines to museums are non existent. For this reason, may we suggest that you celebrate Memorial Day like a New Yorker and stay in New York City to enjoy this weekend. Enjoy your city by checking out a gallery or museum, and see a show. Do all the things that you wish you could do every weekend but cannot stand the throngs of tourists.

Saturday:

Don’t make any grand outdoor plans for this day as it is supposed to be rainy and cold. Instead, take a ride into the city and get some indoor culture. Try out the  MOMA or see the Punk Couture Exhibit at the Met. If you are looking for something more kid friendly, take a visit to the Children’s Museum for the Arts, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, New York Hall of Science, or the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

Sunday:

Sunday is looking good weather wise but we still suggest you stay close to home. Governors Island opens this weekend and many local parks are the perfect place for a Memorial Day picnic. Governors Island is hosting Vintage Baseball being played as it was at the turn of the last century! Visit the Parade Ground and enjoy America’s pastime the way it used to be played. There is also a  Pop Up Library presented by Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library. Brooklyn, New York and Queens Public Libraries parter with the Uni Project, New York City’s portable outdoor reading room, to provide books, learning activities, and children’s programs throughout the summer. Visitors will be able to borrow books “in house”, register for library cards, sign up for summer reading.

Monday:

Finally! check out a local beach on Monday, Memorial Day. The local NYC beaches were devistated by Hurricane Sandy which is all the more reason to show them some economic love. Go to Rockaway Beach and help a local economy or Coney Island and enjoy some rides, hot dogs, and sun.
