Caring for Sensitive Baby Skin with New Products from Weleda

In my role as a communications manager for Weleda, I meet moms from across the country who want to know what they can do to soothe their child’s itchy eczema. An estimated 20 percent of children suffer from this inflammatory ailment, including my own two-year-old, who has had super-sensitive skin and head-to-toe eczema since she was tiny. I know how heartbreaking it can be to see your child with the red, itchy patches that are hallmarks of this extremely common condition. And I know how challenging it can be to find products that are natural, safe and effective.

Although the cause is unknown, eczema is thought to be linked to an overactive response of the immune system. There is no cure, but most little ones eventually outgrow it. Fortunately, Weleda has just introduced two new products that are specifically formulated for highly sensitive, atopic skin, with nary a harsh chemical in sight. Our new Baby Derma White MallowBody Lotion and Face Cream help manage symptoms of eczema by improving the skin barrier function, promoting healthy skin formation and relieving itching from dryness.

Weleda Group_BodyLotion_FaceCream_cmykLike all Weleda products, there are no chemical preservatives, colors, synthetic fragrances or petroleum-derived ingredients in these products. Both are 100% certified natural by the European organization NaTrue. Even better, the Face Cream is 97-percent organic and the Body Lotion is 95-percent organic. Both products have also been accepted by The National Eczema Association, which means they have been tested and found to be safe and beneficial for people with eczema.

What makes the Baby Derma White Mallow line so effective is the key plant ingredients, many of which have long been found in traditional homeopathic remedies for childhood eczema. White Mallow, a flower commonly known as marshmallow, has delicate petals that belie its powerful therapeutic capabilities. We use an extract of a gooey substance found in the plant’s root. This substance is known for its wound-healing properties ― the name marshmallow actually comes from a Greek word that means “to heal.”

Other key ingredients include pansy extract, borage seed oil and coconut oil. Pansy has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, while coconut oil cools and nourishes, helping relieve itching from dryness. Borage seed oil is high in GLAs (gamma linoleneic acids), essential fatty acids necessary for skin health. If you looked at eczema under a microscope, it looks like the skin is broken, almost like it’s pulling apart. These GLAs help keep the skin intact.

Weleda’s existing Calendula Baby Care line is also made for delicate, sensitive baby skin; however, those products contain essential oils. The essential oils are what give the Calendula products their pleasant scent which so many Weleda fans love. Essential oils also have beneficial skincare properties, but some people with extremely sensitive skin may have reactions to essential oils. That’s why the White Mallow line is free of essential oils. There is a slight scent, but that comes only from the natural ingredients themselves.

For my daughter, the White Mallow Body Lotion has noticeably decreased the frequency and severity of flare ups around her wrists, behind her knees, the back of her neck and crooks of her arms. I apply it twice a day, morning and night, and her skin is as soft as it’s ever been. Sometimes, in the rush to get out the door in the mornings, I forget to put cream on her face. By the end of the day, the cold, dry winter air has left her little cheeks red and chapped. I put just a little dab of the White Mallow Face Cream on them at bedtime, and the irritation is gone by morning. It makes this mama’s heart oh-so happy.
