Best Holiday Movies For Kids

This holiday season offers a plethora of kid-friendly films: from penguins and the Muppets to Tintin and Alvin & the Chipmunks, you’re bound to find something your kids will adore. Heavyweight directors such as Spielberg and Scorsese are sure to draw in huge crowds as well.

Here are our picks:

Happy Feet Two

Opening: November 18

Who’s in It: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Sophia Vergara, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon

Plot: A sequel to the animated smash hit Happy Feet, this 3D movie takes us back to Mumble the penguin. He now has a son, Erik, who is afraid of dancing. Meanwhile, the penguins discover a new threat to their home – one that will take everyone working together to save the day.

Rated PG for some rude humor and mild peril


Opening: November 23

Who’s in It: Sasha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone and Jude Law

Plot: This 3D film, directed by Martin Scorsese, is set in 1930’s Paris and involves a 12 year old boy who secretly lives in the walls of a train station. His fathers dies and leaves behind a robot which the boy tries to fix.

Rated PG for mild thematic material, some action/peril and smoking

Arthur Christmas

Opening: November 23

Who’s in It: Jim Broadbent, James McAvoy and Hugh Laurie

Plot: This 3D film is computer-generated animation and reveals the answer to the question on every child’s mind: how does Santa deliver all those presents on one night? On Christmas night at the North Pole, Santa’s youngest son has an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning.

Rated PG for some mild rude humor

The Muppets

Opening: November 23

Who’s in It: Jason Segel, Amy Adam, Zack Galifianakis and Chris Cooper (with many cameos)

Plot: With the help of three fans, the Muppets must reunite to save their old theater from a greedy oil tycoon.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked

Opening: December 16

Who’s in It: Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Justin Long, Amy Poehler and Jason Lee

Plot: Playing around while on a cruise vacation, the Chipmunks and Chipettes accidentally go overboard and get stranded on a tropical island.


The Adventures of Tintin

Opening: December 21

Who’s in It: Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis

Plot: Directed by Steven Spielberg, this animated 3D film tells the tale of young reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock who set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship but learn someone else is in search of the ship.

Rated PG for adventure action violence, some drunkenness and brief smoking

We Bought a Zoo

Opening: December 23

Who’s in It: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning and Thomas Haden Church

Plot: Directed by Cameron Crowe, this film, which is based on a true story, tells about a widower who moves his family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.
