An annual tradition at Brooklyn Center, The Colonial Nutcracker returns to the Walt Whitman Theatre on Sunday, December 15 at 2 p.m. Performed by Dance Theatre in Westchester with a cast of professional ballerinas and budding dance students, this family-friendly version of Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet is set in a wintry colonial Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. Appropriate for ages five and up, the performance features a red-coated mouse army, an enchanted Nutcracker prince, and simultaneous narration to help young audience members follow the story. Your little ones will love this magical Christmas classic, and you will love the price – only $10 a ticket.
For the family in search of an international experience this holiday season, try the Russian holiday fairytale The Snow Maiden on Sunday, December 22 at 4 p.m. Performed in Russian with English subtitles, this delightful Christmas story incorporates traditional Russian songs, dances and elaborate costumes to create a dazzling winter wonderland. Each child also receives a Christmas candy box with admission.
In January, celebrate The Year of the Horse with a colorful Lunar New Year Celebration, performed by the internationally celebrated Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company on Sunday, January 26 at 3 p.m. Your little ones will be enchanted by the colorful dancing lions and dragons, and you will love the rich combination of traditional Chinese music, dance and pageantry that the company is famous for. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children.
If laughter is the best medicine, then Brooklyn Center has just the thing to relieve a little holiday stress. Enjoy an afternoon of side-splitting comedy as funnyman Steve Solomon presents My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m Home for the Holidays on Sunday, November 24 at 3 p.m. Or if classic doo-wop and R&B is more your thing, groove along with An R&B Christmas, featuring chart-topping hits and holiday favorites performed by Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, The Coasters, Blue Magic, and Shirley Alston Reeves.
