Hurricane Sandy Resources – Shelters, Community Organizations, Volunteer Opportunities

Please see our list of emergency shelters and community organizations providing help for those in need. So many residents need so much, and we ask that you please do your part to help these families rebuild. 

Occupy Wall Street has suggested the following volunteer opportunity:

Starting at 9am, volunteers are gathering at Jacobi Church in Sunset Park.  Volunteers will be coordinated at Jacobi Church, and then travel to Far Rockaway, pick up more supplies, cook and do whatever else is needed.  If folks have full cars of ready to eat food, cleaning supplies, clothes, and/or volunteers, they can go straight to Far Rockaway, at the corner of B113 and Rockaway Blvd. They can arrive in Far Rockaway starting at 10am.

New York Communities for Change (NYCC) is also holding a Donation Drive for Far Rockaway and hard hit areas on Long Island: They are especially in need of drivers that can help transport donations to Far Rockaway

You can drop off donations at NYCC’s office in Downtown Brooklyn (2-4 Nevins St. 2nd Floor between Flatbush & Livingston) between 9am-7pm Monday through Friday.

AID FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE:
If you have sustained damage to your property, disaster assistance may be available to you. To ensure your application for assistance is processed as quickly as possible, please take the following steps:

1.) FILE AN APPLICATION- Visit http://www.disasterassistance.gov/ to submit an application.
2.) LOG YOUR APPLICATION with NYCC- After submitting your application, click here and fill out our form to ensure NYCC has the necessary info to follow up on your application.
