Keeping the kids busy while Hurricane Irene comes up the East Coast is going to be every parent’s goal next to stocking up on staples. Here are six activities that will keep them busy while the rain come down.
Play Board Games
Break out all the board games that have been collecting dust and spend a couple of hours just sitting around playing and catching up. Or if you have a new one you have saving up as a birthday party gift, why not surprise everyone and learn a new game.
Bake Cookies or Cake
Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh baked cookies or a cake especially during a rain storm? Whether you are a dessert aficionado or a novice, get the kids together and bake cookies or make a cake. All you need is some store bought cookie dough or cake mix and you are good to go. If you have cookie cutters, it makes all the more fun.
Make a Summer Memory Book
This is the perfect time to weed through all the photos from the summer and pick your favorite ones to make a summer memory book. You will have the best time, reminiscing about the summer and all that you did. And if you have photo printer at home, you can print them out and pull out construction paper or even printer paper and have your child write a sentence about each photo and voila, you have your summer memory book. Or of course, you can use a company like snapfish to create a hardbound memory book.
Read for an Hour
Set aside the video games and television and have everyone get their favorite book or start one and read. Rainy days are perfect for reading. And if you have toddler, why not nestle up and read them their favorite book.
Arts and Crafts
This is a no -brainer. Take out all your markers, crayons, glue sticks, construction paper or printer paper and let them go to town making anew creation. Even if you have an older child, encourage them to write about their summer or even about the hurricane or make a up story. And for the parents, why don’t you sit with them and write your own little journal about the summer. I bet you will be surprised at all that you have done.
Have a Fashion Show
My daughter loves to play dress and have fashion shows. This time, why not let her wear mommy’s high heals and clothes. Or if you have a boy let him wear dad’s shirts and shoes. This will be hilarious and imagine the memories that will come from playing dress in mommy and daddy’s clothes.
I don’t forget to stock up on essentials like water, toilet paper, flashlights, candles, matches, lots of batteries and lots of non-perishable foods. If you have electronics, keep them chargeed
Also don’t forget to have plan on checking on in friends and family at regular intervals.
Be safe during the Hurricane and enjoy spending time with your family.
